International LST and Emissivity Group

The International Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity Working Group (ILSTE-WG) aims to provide advice and recommendations to the wider scientific and user communities on the best practices for retrieval, validation and exploitation of Land Surface Temperature (LST), Ice Surface Temperature (IST), Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT), and Land Surface Emissivity (LSE).

Period of report: March 2014

The main activities in this reporting period can be summarised as follows:

  • Issue of the 1 st GlobTemperature Newsletter
  • Activation of the UK CEMS GlobTemperature 20 Tb Development Workspace
  • GlobTemperature harmonised format agreed at IPM-1 consistent with User Requirements
  • ULeic AATSR dataset (UOL_LST_2P) now operational on CEDA archive
  • ULeic ATSR-2 dataset processed on UK CEMS with validation under way
  • First SURFRAD validation data now available to GlobTemperature as ASCII files  

Period of report: February 2014

The main activities in this reporting period can be summarised as follows:

  • IPM-1 took place on 26 th February 2014
  • Analysis and documentation of results from the 80 respondents of the user requirements online survey into version 0 of the Requirements Baseline Document;
  • Opening of the 2 nd User Consultation Meeting registration site;
  • Opening of the GlobTemperature Website, with users logins for project staff;
  • First draft of proposed netCDF harmonised format for satellite datasets and matchup database;
  • Preparation of first GlobTemperature Newsletter. 

Period of report: January 2014

The main activities in this reporting period can be summarised as follows:

  • User requirements online survey has been open to the LST community for three weeks over which 74 responses have been received, which are in the process of being analysed;
  • Identification of LST Working Group members: Steering Committee and General LST-WG;
  • Development of the GlobTemperature Website, with transfer of domain name in progress;
  • Compilation of list of suitable sources of ground-based validation data, with in-situ LST obtained from NOAA/SURFRAD stations;
  • Full mission AATSR data processed in harmonised format.

Period of report: 19 Nov - 31 Dec 2013

This first period which started with the kick-off meeting which was held on the 19th and 20th of November 2013 at ESRIN.

All activities have been reviewed then in order to launch the project on good tracks. First management actions have been set up in that regard.

Since then, the main activities that have started are:

  • Analysis of the requirements and preparation of a survey which will be distributed to the LST user group;
  • Provisional list of LST-WG members;
  • Meetings with US data providers during the AGU symposium;
  • First LST products are being generated;
  • Draft of GlobTemperature Web Story prepared.
