International LST and Emissivity Group

The International Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity Working Group (ILSTE-WG) aims to provide advice and recommendations to the wider scientific and user communities on the best practices for retrieval, validation and exploitation of Land Surface Temperature (LST), Ice Surface Temperature (IST), Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT), and Land Surface Emissivity (LSE).

Period of report: January 2015

  • Opening of registration for UCM#3 and first announcement made
    • Set-up of a dedicated website at: to collect registration and abstracts
  • AATSR Level-3 data has been uploaded to the FTP server and is in the process of being added to the Data Portal
  • The L4 LST global Merged GEO Product Prototype at UTC times for period 2011 has been uploaded to the GlobTemperature ftp server
  • The L4 LST global Merged LEO Product Prototype at 4 local times daily for the period 2011 has been uploaded to the GlobTemperature ftp server
  • A L4 LST global Merged GEO+LEO Product Prototype for period 2011 has been produced from the Merged GEO + an “internal” Merged LEO at UTC times has been uploaded to the GlobTemperature ftp server
  • The Prototype ATSR Climate Data Record (CDR) has been produced and has been uploaded to the GlobTemperature ftp server

Period of Report: December 2014

The main activities in this reporting period can be summarised as follows:

  • The data portal is now open and functional – announcement to the users’ community was made on the 12th of December. The first three datasets are now available: AATSR, SEVIRI and SSM/I
  • The Product User Guide (PUG) is now published on the website and available from the data portal as well
  • UCM#3 will be held at University of Reading from 11th June (full day) to 12th June (half day). This will be preceded by both the 4th EarthTemp Network Meeting and the 6th LSA SAF Workshop, and
    followed by the 3rd General Meeting of the ILSTE-WG
  • Joint NASA MEaSUREs – ILSTE-WG 2nd General Meeting was held on Wednesday 17th December between 18:00 and 20:00 in San Francisco in conjunction with AGU 2014
  • Invited presentation of GlobTemperature progress in EarthTemp Session given by D. Ghent at AGU 2014
  • Final developments for both the Prototype Merged LST Product and the Prototype Climate Data Record being made ready for delivery to the Data Portal in January

Period of Report: November 2014

The main activities in this reporting period can be summarised as follows:

  • Submission and authorisation of first End-of-Phase deliverables
  • Arrangements finalised for the joint NASA MEaSUREs – ILSTE-WG 2nd General Meeting on Wednesday 17th December in San Francisco; initial discussions on the dates for UCM #3
  • The data portal has been tested by few partners with most issues resolved – almost ready now to go live
  • The first three datasets (AATSR single-sensor, SEVIRI single-sensor, and SSM/I) are uploaded and being reviewed ready for the Data Portal going live
  • All UCS' report good progress with no unforeseen problems or delays
  • Progress on the bias correction for the Prototype Merged Product and modelling the directional effects of satellite LST
  • Processing of monthly 0.05° datafiles for the Prototype Climate Data Record in the harmonised format

Period of Report: October 2014

The main activities in this reporting period can be summarised as follows:

  • The first 2 datasets (AATSR L2 and LST SEVIRI L2) in the harmonized format are available in the dataportal, which is being tested by the consortium members before opening
  • Work in progress to prepare all deliverables that are due before the end of phase 1

Period of Report: September 2014

The main activities in this reporting period can be summarised as follows:

  • IPM2 held on the 26-Sep-2014
  • Version 1.0 of the Requirements Baseline Document is ready for review
  • Second ILSTE-WG Steering Committee telecon held on 15-Sep-2014
  • Delivery of level 2 LST SEVIRI-based product (generated by the LSA SAF) for 2007 and 2008 in the Harmonised Format
  • AATSR Level-2 full mission data in harmonised format ready including IST over sea-ice – delivery underway
  • ATSR-2 Level-2 and ATSR-2/AATSR Level-3 development well advanced
  • First match-ups between satellite LST from AATSR and in-situ LST in harmonised format for validation purposes
